Character Description: Standing at only 5’7”, Issei is not a tall man by modern Western standards, but his martial bearing makes him seem more physically imposing than he is, and his hands are callused from handling a sword. On his left thigh, there is a deep scar from a rifle-musket ball that not even his sire's powerful blood was enough to heal completely. Issei no longer wears a chonmage, but he still keeps his hair long, trimmed at shoulder length, and keeps a small and neatly trimmed beard. Outside, he has taken to wearing Western clothing – stylish but unassuming trousers, jackets, and pressed shirts – but at home, he still prefers kimono and yukata for comfort. Personality: Issei is not a boisterous man. He has a knack for fading into the background of a room even while standing in the centre of it. His silences are attentive. He is taciturn, given to directness when he speaks, and his voice is almost never raised. His face is not expressive which leads others to think mistakenly that he is cold; he is not a man of quick passions, but they are all the more lasting for being slow to kindle. Issei is a man still caught in his time. In some ways this is good, as he retains the values and firm code of ethics that were instilled in him by his father, but in other ways it is bad. He is the most gallant sort of sexist, but a sexist all the same, and he has a very low regard for non-Japanese that borders on xenophobia.  Background:  Kirino Issei was born in Kagoshima, Satsuma-han in 1851, the son of the renowned Hitokiri, Kirino Toshiaki. During his childhood, his father was often away in Kyoto, fighting in the civil war, but Issei, longing for the day he would fight at his father’s side, trained under his mother Hisa – also a skilled martial artist – in the Ko-jigen-ryuu style until he rivalled his father in speed and accuracy. At the age of nineteen, Issei took the field under his father’s command at the battle of Aizu where the Satsuma samurai forced the surrender of the Aizu Shogunate supporters. Satsuma clan’s support played a crucial role in re-establishing the rule of the Meiji Emperor, and many Satsuma men were rewarded with influential positions in the new government. However, more traditional elements did not agree with the Meiji government’s plans for modernizing Japan – or, as they saw it, westernizing it. Many of the samurai who had supported the overthrow of the Shogun felt that the new government was attacking their way of life. The growing discontent of the samurai finally led to the Satsuma rebellion which began with young Satsuma samurai attacking government targets in the prefecture. Saigo Takamori, an influential member of the Meiji government and the Satsuma clan, desired a peaceful resolution, and so he called on his friend and lieutenant Kirino Toshiaki and gathered his most loyal men to him, declaring that he would march to Tokyo to demand satisfaction from the government. But nearly as soon as Saigo’s men crossed out of Satsuma lands, they entered into conflict with Imperial army forces. The Satsuma samurai fought bravely, but they were severely outnumbered and outgunned. On Shiroyama, 500 samurai made their last stand against the Imperial Japanese army that outnumbered them by sixty to one. They drew their swords and charged down the mountainside, knowing that they were going to their deaths and the way of the samurai with them. The enemy guns tore through the Satsuma lines. Issei saw his father go down. He tried to fight his way to his father’s side, but he took a bullet in the leg and fell, and was trampled into the ground in the confusion of battle. He awoke on the battlefield hours later to find it silent and desolate. He had been left to lie with the bodies of the dead. Weak and delirious with pain and blood-loss and barely able to stand, Issei made his way painfully, slowly, half-crawling down the mountain to his home where his mother met him. They fell into each others’ arms in tears; each had believed the other to be dead.  In time, Issei’s wounds closed, but they never fully healed and he was left with a bad limp. Crippled and destitute, Issei became just another of the many displaced samurai who haunted the roads. Some turned to banditry and others to begging. Many gravitated to Kyoto, looking for what honest work they could find. It was there that Issei first met Sesshu Hatsuyuki. A policeman had tried to arrest him for vagrancy and Issei had run, but his lame leg slowed him and he knew he would not be able to run for long. Desperate, he stumbled in through the open gate of a private home to evade pursuit. It was dark inside, and Issei thanked his luck that no one seemed to be home, but then he heard a sound – music coming from nearby. Curious, Issei moved through the house searching for the source, and he found himself in a courtyard garden where a seated woman delicately plucked a long-necked shamisen. She showed no alarm at his appearance, and why should she? He was in a daze, half-starved and exhausted, and barely able to keep his legs under him. Setting aside the instrument, she rose and made him sit. She asked no questions of him, but gave him food to eat, a warm bath to soothe his aches, and a soft futon to sleep on. Issei was so grateful for her kindness that he offered his service to her. He was crippled, he admitted, and of little use, but he could still hold a sword and at the least he would be a shield against unscrupulous men who would take advantage of a woman living alone. But Hatsuyuki only smiled. She had no need of protection, she said. She told him what she was – more than a human woman, a creature old and powerful – a kyuuketsuki. Issei didn’t doubt her. He knew she was telling the truth just as surely as he knew that he had nothing to fear from her. He said that, all the same, he would serve her if she would have him. So, Issei became her guard, her companion, and her childe. Hatsuyuki’s blood strengthened him. His leg grew straight and strong again. For that alone, she would have had Issei’s eternal loyalty. He followed her faithfully even to America when she decided to go. Strengths: Fast healing, superior speed, strength, and agility, heightened senses – the natural strengths of a vampire. Weaknesses: Fire, direct sunlight, decapitation or heart trauma – the natural weaknesses of a vampire. Dark gift: Issei is incredibly fast, even when compared to the already superhuman speed naturally possessed by vampires. He is capable of moving so quickly that a human eye cannot follow. Talents and hobbies: Issei is a man who finds beauty and peace in structure. He enjoys Japanese poetry for its rigid aesthetic, and practices the art of ikebana for meditative relaxation. He is an accomplished biwa player, but seldom performs in public. Before the fall of the meteors, the modern world had no place for swords, but Issei kept his skills sharp by practising iaido, a non-martial form of Jigen-ryuu. Now, however, the breakdown of gentle society has given him cause to take up his sword again for more practical reasons.
